Good question. It looks real dumb doesn't it. If your user name now looks something like this "StupidName20.chelmsfordcitysoapbox84887", don't worry because here is the answer.
It's a bug in the Yuku message board software. It can be fixed quickly, painlessly and without the need of an anaesthetic by simply submitting a support ticket to the techie bods at Yuku here. I think it is something to do with the migration of usernames from EZboards to Yuku.
